Heather BURNESS, Journey to the Wimmera (night driving) / layers in the sand / skin, 2007, unique multiple plate colour etching from plates inserted in salty groundwater flow. Horsham Regional Art Gallery collection, purchased through the Horsham Art Gallery Trust Fund, 2008 © Heather Burness

In the Wimmera, materials are more than resources — they are part of the landscape, the history, and the everyday experiences that shape creative practice. From earth, grain, and timber to found objects and industrial remnants, the region offers a vast source of materiality that artists continually respond to and reinterpret. Through texture, form, and process, these materials become embedded within each work, carrying traces of place, labour, and environment.

This exhibition explores how artists engage with the materials that surround them, transforming the familiar into works that reflect both personal and regional narratives. By utilising locally sourced, reclaimed, and everyday materials, the artists reveal the enduring relationship between maker, material, and the Wimmera landscape itself.
